travel lately?
When is the last time you took a week long vacation and left your phone on do not disturb? Getting off of work for a day can be hard for many business owners much less taking off an entire week. When you have a team of employees that you can count on, travel becomes much easier. Now don’t get me wrong, you never actually shut off your brain, but you can have an actual vacation if you have the right team. You need a TEAM!!
Perhaps you’re afraid of what your team may think if you take a vacation? The truth is, you’ll be a better boss and a happier leader if you do. Your team will thank you and appreciate you even more when you come back refreshed. If you find it hard to take the first step in getting away, here are three steps to get you closer to vacay!
step 1: HIRE THE RIGHT TEAM
Hire SLOW, fire FAST! Make sure you do 3 interviews with three different people sitting in each session to get a clear understanding if the new hire will fit your culture. Training and getting new teams organized doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time, but it needs to happen in order to give you more freedom. Hiring a TEAM is essential to growing your company as well
step 2: ON BOARD YOUR HIRE
Have a GREAT on-boarding SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) that includes a 2 week evaluation, a 30 day gift and perhaps a 60 day evaluation with a gift bag of all the hires favorite things. People love gifts! You’re building a relationship and building trust and with that comes a high quality team member who brings value. THIS is when you start to build a leadership team of people you can trust. When you find this great hire and you offer a great on-boarding process, they are more likely to stick. This means less turn around!
step 3: PLAN THE VACAY
Put the vacay in action. Make a vacation plan and do not change it. You deserve it. Give up your phone and let your team know that you can not be reached. Believe me, they will be fine! The world is not going to end while your toes are in the sand. In fact, what you’ll likely learn is that they will love that you’re gone and they’ll step up. I see more vacations on your calendar.
