From Business Owner to Business Coach—Why I Created The Retail Lab
Oh, what a year it’s been!
In April 2023, I sold my business of 28 years, a business I built from the ground up. Shortly after, I took a much-needed vacation to dip my toes in the sand and take a big deep breath. I was ready to embrace retirement—or so I thought.
During that trip, I received a text from one of my competitors. She asked, “Now that you’re out of the game, can I hire you to help me fix what’s broken?” I paused, then went for a long walk to process what that text meant. That moment shifted everything for me.
Over nearly three decades, I’d lived through every high and low of running a business. I’d gained the type of knowledge you can’t buy and lessons you won’t find in any textbook. I realized I had a gift to share—something I’d earned through blood, sweat, and tears—and I was ready to use it to help others.
Not long after, I helped that competitor improve her business, and I can’t tell you how amazing it felt. It reignited my passion. I wanted to give other retailers—and business owners in general—the support I wish I’d had when I was in the trenches. That’s how The Retail Lab was born.
In the past year, I’ve worked hard to reinvent myself. Selling my business came with emotions I didn’t expect. I had to figure out who I was without the business I’d poured my heart into. I took the time to reconnect with friends, explore hobbies for the first time, and learn how to be still while still finding value in myself.
Through The Retail Lab, I now help retailers across the country look under the hood of their business, fix what’s broken, and lead with vision and strategy to create long-term growth. While retail is my specialty, I’ve also coached businesses outside the retail space, and I’ve loved every second of it.
The biggest gift I offer my clients is heartfelt, authentic support—an experience share that helps them avoid costly mistakes and feel like they have a trusted business partner. I’m their quarterback and, as one client put it, their “pocket angel,” providing guidance whenever they need it.
If you know a business owner who’s just starting out, struggling to grow, or feeling lost in their process, I’d love for you to refer them to me. Together, we can uncover their potential and help them build a business they love.
